Eifelturm Boos: lofty heights and breathtaking views

The Eifelturm Boos: a highlight with a panoramic view like no other

A holiday in the Vulkaneifel offers no shortage of days out. One of the most rewarding is the Eifelturm Boos, a popular viewing platform in the middle of this remarkable geo nature park. The Eifelturm Boos: location and facts

The Eifel counts as one of the most impressive landscapes in Germany. Renting a holiday home by the lake in the Eifel gives you a comfortable base for any number of trips, among them a visit to the Booser Eifelturm. Standing right on the Römerweg there, it is one of 76 striking points of interest on the Traumpfad around Boos. The well-signposted timber tower was built in 2003 and officially opened in May 2004. It rests on a concrete foundation, and its timber comes from the Douglas firs of the Booser Wald. The viewing platform sits at a height of 25 metres. You reach it by a wooden staircase of 125 steps.

A paradise for walkers

The area is a paradise for anyone who loves nature and walking. From your holiday home at the Waldsee Rieden you can explore it on 240 kilometres of waymarked walking trails. The Eifelturm Boos stands at the Booser Doppelmaar, two maars — crater lakes — that form part of the volcanic field. The Traumpfad known as the Eifelturmpfad Boos starts right at the Vulkanparkstation.

A day out: superb long views in good weather

Set as it is in the many-layered landscape of the Vulkaneifel, the Eifelturm Boos makes a perfect day out, with detours along the Traumpfad. Benches at the loveliest spots invite you to pause along the way. The walk there is worth it even without the climb: the landscape opens up several times around the Booser Doppelmaar, and on clear days the view runs far across the volcanic cones of the Osteifel.

What to see in the area

From the viewing platform of the Eifelturm Boos you used to see the whole variety of the surrounding Eifel landscape: the long-extinct volcanic cones, and the Hunsrück and the Westerwald in the distance. While the closure lasts, what remains of that is the view from the paths around the Doppelmaar. Close by are the world-famous Nürburgring and the ruins of the Nürburg at a height of 678 metres. The Hochkelberg, 674 metres high, is easy to make out from the Eifelturm as well. Another landmark in view is the Hohe Acht at 747 metres, with its Kaiser-Wilhelm-Turm.

A wooden staircase of 125 steps used to lead up to the platform at 21.5 metres; the tower itself stands 25 metres tall. Until the closure, the view from the top was among the finest panoramas in the region. A pair of binoculars is still worth packing today: from the benches at the Doppelmaar you can pick out the Nürburg and the Hohe Acht clearly.

Places in the area well worth a visit

If you rent a house in the Eifel and explore the area from the Waldsee Rieden, the premium holiday homes “Annika”, “Susi” and “Tommy” make the ideal base for any number of trips, near and far. Visit the fairy-tale Bürresheim Castle and follow in the footsteps of Indiana Jones, or take a look at the historic half-timbered houses in Monreal. Maria Laach Abbey with its famous monastery grounds is well worth seeing, as are the broad expanse of the Laacher See and the many maars of the Eifel. A visit to the old town of Koblenz, to the Deutsches Eck or to one of the largest fortresses in Europe, Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, is every bit as rewarding as a trip to the “gateway to the Eifel”, the town of Mayen with its historic castle, where the well-known Burgfestspiele are staged every year. The castle is also home to the Eifelmuseum Mayen with a wealth of exhibits. Exploring it appeals to young and old alike, because interactive stations on the different levels invite you to join in.

The Deutsches Schieferbergwerk slate mine in Mayen is a great experience too: you ride in aboard a mine wagon, and the sprawling underground labyrinth of galleries is exciting and full of interest. If you enjoy wine festivals or fancy a day on the Moselle, these are the places to head for: the little town of Cochem with its enchanting Cochem Castle, the picturesque Bernkastel-Kues with its narrow lanes, its many restaurants and cafés, and the old Roman city of Trier.

The tower stands on the Schneeberg, to the north-west of the village of Boos in the district of Mayen-Koblenz. As one of 76 so-called points of interest, it is part of one of the Eifel Traumpfade.

The Eifelturm was built in 2003 under the direction of the local heritage association ProBoos.
