The Wichtelweg elf trail: our tip above all others
Ten kilometres from Rieden, between Kottenheim and Ettringen, a trail of around 1.7 kilometres runs through the Kottenheimer Wunderwald. From 15 November to 31 December 2026 the woods are full of Wichtel, the little elves of German folklore.
Why we name it first: it is not a market. There are no opening hours, no crowds, no ticket. You go when you like, even at 15:00 on a Tuesday, when every market is shut. For families with small children that is more relaxed than any mulled wine stall, and if you book at short notice it is the one Advent outing that always works.
The start is the Kottenheimer Winnfeld walkers’ car park on the K20. The official opening is on Sunday, 15 November 2026 from 12:00, when the trail is lit up in the evening and the Wäenloft-Hött serves sausages, mulled wine and children’s punch.

Mayen: 13 km
27 November to 23 December 2026 Friday 12:00–21:00 · Saturday 11:00–22:00 · Sunday 13:00–21:00, on every Advent weekend. Marktplatz Mayen.
You can see what makes it special before you even arrive: through Advent a large candle burns on the 34-metre Goloturm of the Genovevaburg, lit on the Friday before the first Sunday in Advent. There is a stage programme with choirs, visits from St Nicholas and craft activities for children.
Two extra dates: the Nikolauskrammarkt, the St Nicholas fair, on 1 December and Christmas Shopping on 17 December, with extended opening until 22:00.
Burgbrohl Castle: 20 km
The second, third and fourth Advent weekends of 2026 Saturdays 14:00–22:00 · Sundays 12:00–21:00. Free admission.
A Christmas festival around the castle and in its park. The combination of a castle setting and free admission is rare, as most castle Christmas events charge for a ticket.
Obermendig Christmas market: 12 km
28 November 2026, a Saturday. From the Marienstift to the historic Florinshof.
A one-day market, run by the local clubs and societies of Mendig. Small and village-like: if you know the big markets, this is the opposite.

These markets close by had not published their 2026 dates at the beginning of August. We will add them as soon as they are settled:
- Rustic Advent market in Monreal (15 km), a half-timbered village centre below two castle ruins, with almost nothing but handmade goods. In previous years it fell on the third Advent weekend. Alongside it runs the Monrealer Krippenweg, a nativity trail with around 170 cribs in the lanes and windows.
- Andernach Christmas village (20 km), with its living nativity, staged by volunteers since 1991, with real animals in a wooden stable.
- Weihnachtszauber at Namedy Castle (22 km), a one-day event at a moated castle.
- Koblenz Christmas market (41 km), the largest in the region, spread over seven squares in the old town, plus the Christmas Garden at Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, reached by the Rhine cable car.

Burgweihnacht at Satzvey Castle: approx. 70 km
On all four Advent weekends: 28./29.11. · 5./6.12. · 12./13.12. · 19./20.12.2026 Saturdays 12:00–20:00 · Sundays 12:00–19:00, nativity play on Saturdays from 13:00.
The best organised market on the whole list. A medieval nativity play in the castle park, costumes from the Hohenstaufen period, and the scenes are performed in Latin and Middle High German with a narrator translating. There is also the “Werkstatt des Weihnachtsmanns", Father Christmas’s workshop, with elves and somewhere to hand in your letter.
Admission (advance / on the door): adults 12 / 15 € · children aged 4–12 8 / 10 € · under 4s free · family ticket 32 / 40 €. Tickets are already on sale.
Mosel-Wein-Nachts-Markt Traben-Trarbach: approx. 85 km
20 November 2026 to 2 January 2027, at weekends and on special opening days. Admission is a one-off 5 € for the whole run, and children under 16 go free.
Germany’s only underground Christmas market, in the historic wine cellars of the “Traben-Trarbacher Unterwelt". The cellars are not linked to one another, so you walk from one to the next at street level.
Cochem: three events, approx. 45 km
Christmas market: 27 November to 20 December 2026, Fridays to Sundays, in the lanes of the old town below the floodlit Cochem Castle.
Adventszauber at Cochem Castle: 5 and 6 December 2026, 11:00–18:00 on both days. Promenade theatre based on Dickens' “A Christmas Carol", hourly, running around 45 minutes. Adults 13.50 €, children up to 17 years 9.50 €. Tickets online only from 1 November.
Burgweihnacht: 12 and 13 December 2026, 12:00–18:00. A living nativity play with actors and real animals, a circuit of around 25 minutes.
Bad Münstereifel: approx. 65 km
20 November to 30 December 2026, daily except on Totensonntag, the German remembrance day for the dead, and the Christmas public holidays. Mon–Thu 13:00–19:00 · Fri–Sun 11:00–20:00. Free of charge.
At six weeks, the longest-running market in the region, set in front of a completely preserved medieval town wall. The City Outlet adjoins it directly, and the combination of market and shopping works particularly well on a wet day.
More places worth the drive
- Bernkastel-Kues (approx. 85 km), 20.11. to 20.12.2026, a half-timbered old town on the bank of the Moselle. Closing fireworks on 20.12. at 18:00.
- Monschau (approx. 100 km), 27.11. to 20.12.2026, on the four Advent weekends only. The best-known market in the Eifel. Important: use Park & Ride, as parking in the valley is very limited.
- Trier (approx. 110 km), 20.11. to 22.12.2026, in front of the UNESCO World Heritage cathedral. Free.

Why Advent at the Waldsee works
In Advent, what the houses have anyway comes into its own: your own outdoor sauna on the terrace, a wood-burning stove with the firewood ready beside it and a whirlpool bath in the bathroom. After an afternoon on a cold market square, that is the right order to take them in.
The practical advantage in Advent: you drive out to a market in the evening and come back to a warm house rather than a hotel room. And during the day the region is as empty as it never is in summer.
