A dense network of Traumpfade criss-crosses the Rhein-Mosel-Eifel region. More than a dozen of these premium walking trails lead through the glorious Vulkaneifel, the volcanic Eifel. They invite you on a journey of discovery through a landscape shaped by volcanoes. Once covered in glowing lava, the region today is fertile and thickly wooded. The Traumpfade pass steep volcanic cones and idyllic crater lakes, and tempt you to visit castles and palaces. What all the Traumpfade have in common is that their routing follows what walkers really want. They take account of the wish to experience nature, but they take in cultural attractions as well. Clear waymarking and an app developed especially for them make for comfort and safety along the way. Sustainability, the great trend of our time, is given particular attention too.

The Traumpfade sharpen the region’s tourism profile
The Vulkaneifel, the volcanic Eifel, is a land of volcanoes and maars — crater lakes left behind by eruptions — with a density of natural phenomena that is unique in Europe. Volcanic activity has left clear traces everywhere. The landscape is not called “a textbook of the Earth’s history” for nothing, and it fascinates geologists all over the world. The experts agree: volcanism here has not died out, it has merely paused for breath. The Vulkaneifel can point to some impressive accolades. The Dauner Maare and the Mosenberg-Meerfelder Maar volcanic system both carry the outstanding title of “Germany’s most important geotopes”. The Ulmener Maar was recently chosen by the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) as a piece of geological heritage. It now appears on a list of 100 sites worldwide, in the same company as the Grand Canyon or Uluru in Australia. The IUGS is regarded as one of the largest and most important scientific institutions in the world. The Ulmener Maar came through from 181 candidates in 56 countries and is one of three sites in Germany to have been granted this distinction.
The whole Traumpfad region has committed itself to a forward-looking task: bringing together the evidence of the Earth’s history and the needs of tourism. Everything there is to do in the Vulkaneifel, criss-crossed as it is by the Traumpfade, benefits from that cooperation. Restaurants and places to stay, art, culture and sport are all drawing growing attention. Many guests have come to know and love the Vulkaneifel by now. A whole region is becoming more and more popular with visitors, and not without reason.
Plenty of sights along the Traumpfade
You get a first impression of what makes the Traumpfade so appealing right at the private Waldsee Rieden holiday park, your comfortable holiday base. The Waldseepfad route runs along the idyllic lakeshore and the Rehbach stream to Rieden, also known as the “Steinmetzdorf”, the stonemasons’ village. Then it leads through a mystical hall-like beech wood, over lush pastures and up a zigzag path to the transmitter tower on the Gänsehals. From its platform a magnificent view opens up over the Neuwieder Becken basin. The descent takes you to the Gänsehalshütte, which also tempts you with a breathtaking view, and through an imposing sea of boulders back to the Riedener Waldsee.
Mayen and Koblenz just a stone’s throw away
The towns of Mayen and Koblenz are only 15 and 30 minutes’ drive respectively from the private Waldsee Rieden holiday park. Mayen, with more than 700 years of town history behind it, is known for its geographical position as the “gateway to the Eifel”. Surrounded by green forest, this handsome little Eifel town tempts you with good shopping, characterful pubs, comfortable cafés and well-kept restaurants. Watching over Mayen is the Genovevaburg, the landmark you can see from far around. Destroyed and rebuilt several times, the late-Gothic castle today houses the Eifelmuseum Mayen with its exhibition areas “EifelTotal” and “Deutsches Schieferbergwerk Mayen”, the German slate mine. The Burgfestspiele Mayen enjoy an excellent reputation far beyond the town boundaries. The eagerly awaited performances of 2023 run from 4 June to 26 August under the season’s motto “Hexen”, witches. At the “Terra Vulcania” visitor centre in Mayen you gain a deep insight into 7,000 years of quarrying volcanic basalt. While the museum brings the once so laborious and extremely dangerous work vividly to life, the Mayener Grubenfeld stretches out right next door, with mining history you can touch, the Silbersee lake and the Lapidea sculpture park. Families with children will find plenty of hands-on activities at the centre. Koblenz, too, tempts you with views that are little short of a dream. Kaiser Wilhelm I once again sits enthroned above the Deutsches Eck: a reconstruction of the equestrian statue destroyed by artillery fire in 1945 was unveiled in 1993. The Deutsches Eck and its monument draw around two million visitors year after year. For a breathtaking view over Koblenz and the confluence of the Moselle and the Rhine, head for the cultural centre at Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. A lift that forms part of the public transport network takes you up to the fortress in comfort. Far more spectacular, though, is the ride in the cable car. Take a seat in one of the 16 panoramic cabins and enjoy the incomparable view! The UNESCO World Heritage Site “Oberes Mittelrheintal”, the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, and the town of Koblenz lie at your feet. A few kilometres from the centre of Koblenz, Stolzenfels Castle stands as the embodiment in stone of Prussian Rhine romanticism. The hand of the famous architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel is visible throughout the castle. Park and gardens invite you to a romantic stroll. A detour to the half-timbered village of Monreal is a must for anyone visiting the eastern Eifel. Below the two castle ruins of Löwenburg and Philippsburg lies an ensemble of half-timbered houses that is considered unique. The Traumpfad Monrealer Ritterschlag leads past a backdrop that became known across Germany through the television series “Der Bulle und das Landei”. Maria Laach Abbey, a Benedictine monastery, bears witness to the deep faith of the people of the Eifel. As one of the finest Romanesque buildings in Germany, this abbey has an appeal that hardly any visitor can resist. The Laacher See, in the largest nature reserve in Rhineland-Palatinate, is a true paradise of nature with rare birds and plants. Anyone in search of rest finds the peace they are looking for at this lake, up to 50 metres deep, which also opens up plenty of sport and leisure
The holiday park at Waldsee Rieden, a real Eifel gem
The many sights along the Traumpfade, whether fairy-tale palaces, picturesque half-timbered villages or unique havens of nature, call for somewhere comfortable to stay. You have earned the right to spend your holiday, the finest weeks of the year, in well-kept surroundings that are appealing in every respect. The private Rieden Waldsee holiday park, with its three superbly equipped Holiday Homes Susi, Annika and Tommy, meets the highest demands for comfort and fittings. They stand out not only for their good food but also for being decidedly dog-friendly. Reassuring for dog owners: there is even a veterinary clinic close to your holiday home. The fenced terrace at these 3 top homes gives you a good deal of security, should your four-legged friend have a strong urge to roam. A packet of treats on arrival and dog bowls in the house are a matter of course in the top homes named above, at the Waldsee Rieden holiday park.
As well as the Traumpfad “Waldseepfad Rieden” right on the doorstep of your holiday home, the region has 14 more Traumpfade to offer.
The Traumpfade routes are between 6 and 16 kilometres long.
Your four-legged friends are of course welcome on the Traumpfade, although they should be kept on the lead on walks through the woods, to protect the wildlife.
For a week’s holiday for 2 people in one of the five-star holiday homes at the private Waldsee Rieden holiday park, you should budget around 1,200 €.
Clear waymarking is regarded as a hallmark of the Traumpfade. A dedicated app is available as well.
